New Device from Elsie Manufacturing Makes Testing Easier

One of the problems with testing fire suppression equipment is that the heat activated fusible link must be operated during the test.

This is no longer a problem, thanks to Elsie Manufacturing and their Solenoid Activated Link (SAL). The concept is simple, a device that allows for a fast, reliable, and accurate test for the fire suppression equipment in a given building. It is simple to use and install, non-destructive to the heat activated fusible link, and easily re-settable after activation.

The design is simple. A solenoid is mounted in an electrical box (which accepts standard electrical fittings) through which the special plunger of the solenoid passes through. The extension of this plunger past the electrical box wall is about 3/8 of an inch. A standard Elsie fusible Link hooks onto this overhanging plunger and the fire suppression devise is then hooked to the standard Elsie Link. With this set up, testing is easy. Just a simple activation of the solenoid, and the plunger is unhooked from the standard Elsie link, activating the fire suppression device without damaging the link.

The beauty of the SAL is that fire suppression devices can be operated on demand and from remote locations. Other features of the SAL include synchronization with smoke detectors that allows for activation by smoke detectors as well as tool-less re-setting after activation. However, with the proven reliability of the Elsie heat-activated link, even if the power to the SAL is interrupted, you can still be confident that the fusible link will operate as designed.
